To teach students successfully at St Ivo teachers must:
- Be fair
- Be consistent and
- Be committed to teaching them.
It is commonly accepted that students welcome praise and that recognition of success motivates them to continue learning. Using praise appropriately is a skill in its own right.
We must:
- Make praise personal, genuine, appropriate, specific, consistent and used regularly.
- Instil confidence in students and their abilities by using positive and encouraging language such as I know you can.. (Page 18: Unit 18 Improving the success of learning National Strategy)
- Use the online system to record success. (Instructions on using e-reg)
- Aim to achieve 4 positives for every negative comment.
- Use a variety of methods to communicate success. This could include post cards, displaying work, pupils presenting work and communication home.
