1. Teachers must make the learning objectives explicit to all students.
This will usually happen at the beginning of the lesson but could happen at other stages in the lesson. This can be done in a variety of ways:
- written or projected onto the board
- orally
- written by students in their books
- printed on handouts
These objectives must be revisited throughout and at the end of the lesson.
2. Lessons must be clearly structured to promote learning
- Lessons should begin with a starter activity
- The main body of the lesson must include a variety of appropriate activities
- Tasks should be challenging to all students
- Tasks should, where appropriate, encourage students to understand how they learn in order to become more independent learners.
- Lessons should have a clear finish or plenary in which students should be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learnt.
3. Lessons must ensure that all students are capable of making progress.
When planning lessons staff should address...
- Differentiation
- Group Work
- ICT
- Literacy
Students should be encouraged to:
- Manage their own learning
4. Lessons must cater for students of all abilities. Differentiation must be integral to all aspects of learning & teaching
Lessons can be differentiated by task and / or by outcome.
This can be achieved through:
- Questioning,
- Group work,
- Adapting resources,
- Targeting students,
- Effective AFL,
- Providing students with choice and ownership of their own learning,
- Varying the use of different teaching strategies.
5. Teachers must provide Assessment for Learning opportunities so that students know where they are, where they want to get to and how they are going to get there.
Staff should consider:
- peer evaluation
- self evaluation
- formative feedback
- sharing assessment criteria with students
All students should be aware of their current working level/grade and their targets for improvement.
