Text Box: Year 12 Visit to the Battlefields
AS history students spent four days in Belgium at the beginning of March as part of their World War I module. They visited the Ypres Salient and went into France on one of the days to see other parts of the Western Front. The students were accompanied by Peter Crook, an expert on the First World War, who fascinated them with his knowledge. The trip was a great success and enjoyed by all.
Russia Trip
The history department embarked on its twelfth visit to Russia during February half-term. It was probably the best trip yet with a wealth of experiences that will remain forever with those who were fortunate enough to participate. As we expected, temperatures were low, reaching -24 degrees Celsius when we arrived in Moscow after an overnight train journey from St Petersburg - an exhilarating experience!
Activities Week
The department is organising a day visit to Ypres for Year 9 pupils on Thursday, 15 July, during Activities Week. This will complement our visit to the Somme in November. It will involve a visit to the Flanders Field Museum and to a number of interesting features of the Western Front. Details can be obtained from the History Department.

The recently formed St Ivo Chess Club meets every Thursday lunchtime in T9.Mr Barron runs the club and members include learners, intermediates and accomplished players. The club has recently joined The British Land UK Chess Challenge 2004.
